“Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity”― John Muir

As the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve, I reflect on my heart's deepest desires: adventure, freedom, and love. Life will often feel like a series of closed doors, but every new year brings fresh opportunities. This year, I yearn to break free from the routine and embrace the wild, and to my surprise, an incredible opportunity presented itself.
Initially, my thoughts danced around the idea of van life. Traveling the country in a van, waking up to breathtaking vistas, and forging my own path excited me. However, a realization washed over me like a gentle wave: the true essence of my adventure will not just be about exploring nature—it will be about sharing those experiences with the two remarkable people I love the most: my children.

My daughter is approaching her sixteenth birthday with a spirit as vibrant as the sunsets we will chase, and my son, who just turned seven, will fill my heart with joy and purpose. They are at the perfect ages for exploration and curiosity, igniting the most mundane moments. The idea of taking a road trip, enjoying the beauty of our national parks, and making unforgettable memories together excites me more than any solo journey ever could.

One evening, my daughter and I sat down, inspired and eager to hear her thoughts on embarking on an epic year of camping trips. I proposed venturing into the great outdoors once a month, exploring a mix of short excursions and extended adventures lasting anywhere from ten days to two weeks. To my delight, her eyes sparkled with enthusiasm as she wholeheartedly embraced the idea. "When do we start?" she asked, a wide smile spreading across her face.
And just like that, our plan began to take shape.
With an exhilarating sense of purpose, we grabbed some notebooks and began sketching our dream itinerary. Our initial list included a few beloved national parks, such as Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Zion, and Death Valley. However, as we delved deeper into research, our aspirations expanded. One by one, parks began to find their way onto our list, transforming our handful of destinations into an impressive lineup of fifteen national parks (Pinnacles, Channel Islands, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Crater Lake, Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, Arches, Capitol Reef, Death Valley, Joshua Tree, Redwoods, Mount Rainier, and Sequoia & Kings Canyon), one state park (Anza-Borrego), and a national monument (Dinosaur National Monument).
Exploring America's Natural Wonders

Our chosen camping method promises to be an extraordinary adventure, offering us a unique opportunity to deeply connect with nature while strengthening our family's bonds. As we embark on this journey, each park we select will reveal its distinctive landscape and unforgettable experiences, enriching our travels in ways we can only imagine.
Picture this: I can already envision myself standing in wide-eyed wonder at the vibrant geothermal wonders of Yellowstone, where the bubbling geysers and vivid hot springs create an otherworldly atmosphere. The rich colors of the mineral deposits contrast brilliantly with the clear blue sky, creating an unforgettable backdrop. In contrast, I dream of gazing up at the majestic, jagged peaks of the Grand Teton, their snow-capped summits piercing the horizon. It's easy to imagine ourselves hiking the rugged trails, surrounded by the pristine beauty of alpine lakes and lush wildflower fields, breathing in the crisp mountain air.

Our camping list will continue to evolve, incorporating a variety of breathtaking landscapes that each tell their own story. We'll explore the lush, verdant forests of the Pacific Northwest, where towering trees and moss-draped branches create a serene, enchanting environment. In the Southwest, we'll wander through the mysterious canyons, their intricate rock formations, and rich, warm hues strikingly contrasting the expansive, arid desert landscapes.
As the sun sets, we'll gather around late-night campfires, the flickering flames casting a warm glow on our faces. Those moments will be filled with laughter and storytelling under the blanket of stars, sharing old and new tales, our voices mingling with the sounds of nature. And, of course, we'll indulge in the timeless tradition of making s'mores—melting marshmallows sandwiched between rich chocolate and graham crackers, a perfect treat that captures the warmth of our shared experiences. Each evening will celebrate life's simple pleasures, reminding us that these moments of togetherness are truly invaluable.
Building Lasting Memories

As a parent, nothing brings me greater joy than watching my children flourish and embrace the world around them. I eagerly anticipate the moment my daughter's adventurous spirit comes to life as she enthusiastically takes charge of planning our routes for our trips. I can already picture her excitement as she maps paths through lush forests and sparkling rivers. With his infectious joy, my son will undoubtedly light up every hike we embark on, his laughter echoing through the trees as we explore new terrains and discover hidden gems in nature.
Each journey we take together will be more than just a break from our everyday routines; it will be a nurturing ground filled with love, resilience, and countless unforgettable moments. Gathering around a campfire and sharing stories as the flames dance will foster a deep sense of connection, bringing us closer together.

The thought of camping beneath a vast, star-studded sky fills me with anticipation. I can imagine lying on a blanket, gazing up at the countless constellations, listening to the soothing sounds of the wilderness surrounding us, from the rustle of leaves to the distant calls of nocturnal creatures. These experiences will transform my dreams of family adventures into cherished realities.
I will find freedom in these outdoor escapades as we navigate trails, breathe in the fresh air, and feel the earth beneath our feet. Each step will lead us deeper into nature and strengthen the bonds between us, creating a tapestry of memories woven with laughter, discovery, and shared moments that we will treasure for years to come.
An Invitation to Freedom and Love

As our grand adventure draws nearer, I find myself reflecting deeply on the significance of each meticulously planned trip. These journeys are not merely escapes from the routine and pressures of everyday life; they represent vital steps towards a more fulfilling existence filled with connection, discovery, and growth. The joyous laughter of my children echoes in my mind, reminding me of the exhilarating moments we share as we step into the unknown together. I can picture us gathered under a blanket of stars, sharing hushed dreams and aspirations, encapsulating everything I truly yearn for in life.
True freedom, I have come to understand, is not merely the absence of commitments or responsibilities. It flourishes in the vibrant moments we create alongside our loved ones, moments that carve lasting memories in our hearts. With this realization, we stand on the brink of embarking on a year-long journey, one brimming with adventure, love, and an unbreakable bond—a journey that will take us deep into the embrace of nature. It is here, amidst the towering trees and sprawling landscapes, that we will find a sense of belonging that reinforces our familial connection in a profound way.

In a world that often prioritizes progress, convenience, and distractions, I invite you to join us in exploring the magnificence of the wilderness with your loved ones. Let us seek out the freedom and love that lies hidden in the gentle rustling of leaves, the soothing sounds of rivers cascading over rocks, and the tender whispers of the wind wrapping around us. Together, we will forge an unforgettable path of exploration filled with laughter and treasured moments that we will carry with us for a lifetime.
Stay tuned as we take the long way to finding connection within ourselves, our loved ones, and the natural world around us.
