"In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." - John Muir

A few years ago, my daughter Charlotte had an incredible opportunity to spend a day learning about sustainable building techniques in the southern Sierra Nevada region. Her experience with Sarah Brown, an off-grid enthusiast and cob-building expert, was nothing short of transformative.

Charlotte has always been curious about construction and eco-friendly living, so when she learned about cob—an ancient building material made from clay, sand, straw, and water—she jumped at the opportunity. Located in breathtaking nature, Sarah's off-grid homestead provided the perfect backdrop for this hands-on lesson.

A Day in the Life of Cob Building

From the moment we arrived, the excitement in the air was palpable. Sarah welcomed Charlotte warmly and shared her passion for natural building. After a brief introduction to the materials and principles of cob building, it was time to get her hands dirty!

Charlotte learned about the different components of cob and how they work together to create sturdy, sustainable structures. With Sarah guiding her, she eagerly mixed the mud, pine needles, and sand, feeling the texture change as she worked. The tactile experience of building with cob was mesmerizing; Charlotte described it as a blend of art and science.

As they built small walls and formed sculptures, Charlotte absorbed Sarah's wisdom and insight on the benefits of using natural materials. Sarah explained how cob provides insulation and durability and blends harmoniously with the environment. It was clear that this method of building is not only practical but also a way to foster a deeper connection with the Earth.

Interviewing Sarah Brown

Charlotte interviewed with Sarah for a video project. Charlotte prepared thoughtful questions about Sarah's journey into off-grid living, her motivation for using cob, and her challenges. Watching them interact was heartwarming; Charlotte’s enthusiasm and curiosity shone as she conversed with Sarah.

Sarah's answers were insightful and inspiring, emphasizing the importance of sustainable living and how everyone can contribute to preserving our planet. The ensuing video captures the essence of their discussion, showcasing not only the technique of cob building but also a passionate advocate for green living.

The Impact of the Experience

Charlotte came home from her day with Sarah, bubbling with excitement and new knowledge. The experience of building with cob not only sparked her interest in sustainability but also deepened her appreciation for hands-on learning. She expressed a desire to explore more about eco-friendly construction and even dreams of incorporating these principles into her future career.

Witnessing my child's growth and engagement with such meaningful topics is incredibly rewarding as a parent. I am grateful to Sarah Brown for sharing her expertise and passion with Charlotte and providing a unique educational experience she will carry with her forever.
